RESISTING EXPECTATIONS

Karel Doing, Wilderness Series  7-9pm (with Q&A) The Horsebridge Centre, Cinema, Top Floor, 11 Horsebridge Road, Whitstable, CT5 1AF FREE Tomorrow night (4th June 2018) we'll be presenting a programme of live expanded and single screen works as part of The Whitstable Biennale at The Horsebridge Centre in Whitstable. A selection of film, video and performance works that investigate, critique, and play with ways to make and present the moving image, confounding our perception and conception of it, through direct physical action, filming and editing processes or manipulation of the technology. Karel Doing uses ingredients from nature to ‘grow’ images on film; Vicky Smith’s live manipulation of the filmstrip produces primal, abstract and noisy animation; Conor Kelly explores the relationship between sound, image and site; Deniz Johns reverses the allure of the ‘selfie’, and Peter Gidal’s collaboration with William Burroughs calls the films ‘so called im...

Still from Risoni by Nicky Hamlyn Divisions of the Screen 24th May 2018 7.30 - 9.30pm Studio 3 Gallery , Jarman Building, School of Arts, University of Kent, Canterbury, CT2 7UG Nicky Hamlyn and Simon Payne present a programme of single-screen and expanded films and videos that explore colour field abstraction, grids, lines, shadows, holes and frames-within-frames that are often underpinned by repetitive, almost musical structuring.

Especially for the opening night only there will be a screening and an installation of four students work from the School of Music and Fine Art and School of Arts Film  department, presenting of a range of moving image work from interactive video tape installations through to single screen shorts by: Olu Taiwo, Alexander Vanegas-Sus, José Macabra and Lorenzo Gianni. Media Blackout II by Deniz Johns We are extremely proud to present eleven artist filmmakers work during this years' Whitstable Biennale , starting with a four week exhibition at University of Kent, School of Arts' Studio 3 Gallery 10 May - 8 June 2018, 11 - 5pm Monday to Friday and a one night screening ' Resisting Expectations ' at The Horsebridge Arts Centre on 4th June. Extending the Frame is an installation of experimental artist film, video and 3D light works featuring; Amy Dickson , Simon Payne , Andrew Pepper and Mary Stark . Bringing together holograms, woven film, recorded mobile phone performance and a classic avant-garde film used anew as a graphic score. These works have been chosen because of their intrinsic use of one or more elements of what we think of as cinema, light, duration, movement and the representation of 3 dimensional space on a 2 dimensional medium.
