Divisions of the Screen

Payne's digital video works involve elementary transitions and alternating graphic forms that create spatial depths within the screen but also bounce back to affect the environment in which they're shown. Hamlyn’s 16mm film loop performances derive from elementary repeating patterns that, when brought together with multiple shifting projectors, produce numerous rhythmic permutations of filmic planes that find and represent new three-dimensional layers and conjunctions. Together these filmmakers bring both a space for reflection and a heightened awareness of the active function of the frame, through its careful subdivision.
